The power remains out for nearly 25,000 households and businesses throughout Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. At the height of the outage, over 150,000 customers throughout the region had lost power. Indiana & Michigan Power says that power may not be fully restored until Sunday in South Bend. NIPSCO expects to restore all power today.
A severe line of storms, packing sustained winds in excess of 70 MPH, hit the region on Monday night. The storms were confirmed to be a derecho, which is a storm with high winds stretching hundreds of miles and tens of miles wide.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado with winds estimated at 95MPH touched down near the town of La Grange, approximately 45 miles east of South Bend. The tornado was roughly 250 yards wide and followed a path of roughly a mile before dissipating, uprooting trees and bringing down power lines along the way.
A fallen tree in South Bend created new outages overnight. I&M is still reporting 15,136 customers without power in Indiana and Michigan. Over 8,000 NIPSO customers are without power in Northern Indiana.
