Looking to grub on some tasty local food for a value price?

Winter Restaurant Week just got underway in downtown South Bend. The event, which offers diners a chance to try different locally-owned restaurants for a bargain price, runs until Sunday, February 8.

Local restaurant owner Andrew Elegante says that this time of the year is traditionally a slower time for downtown restaurants. Elegante is the proprietor of South Bend Brew Werks, a relatively new downtown brewpub that features beers brewed on-site and “farm to fork” food.

“Restaurant Week gives people a fun and delicious reason to get off the couch, get in their car, and head downtown to enjoy what is, at most of the restaurants, a special menu they can only get during those two weeks,” Elegante told the South Bend Voice. “The most magical part of the whole thing is that businesses who often compete work together to make this happen. It’s a sign of the strong sense of community present in Downtown South Bend and shows off what can be accomplished when we work together.”

All told there are sixteen different locations participating in this year’s Winter Restaurant Week. Each restaurant has their own unique offerings. Deals vary by location but the idea is to offer value-priced choices to draw in crowds that might not have otherwise considered eating downtown. Prices start at $11, $22 or $33. Some of the restaurants charge per person while others opt for a meal-for-two option.

“I think for people who haven’t been downtown they will be pleasantly surprised at the breadth of food offerings (sushi, Americana, gastropub, gourmet), the quality and how vibrant the scene is,” Elegante added.

And in case eating at some of South Bend’s finest establishments seems like an indulgence, the event has the added bonus of supporting a good cause. DTSB, which helps to organize the event, says that ten percent of the sales from Winter Restaurant Week will be donated to Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Restaurant Week takes place twice a year: once in the winter and once in the summer. It will be held again in late June.
