Sheila Niezgodski announced Wednesday night that she would seek the 6th District seat on the South Bend Common Council currently held by Oliver Davis.
Niezgodski says that she is a lifelong resident of South Bend, residing in the 6th District for the past 16 years.
“Today I believe that we are at a crossroads,” Niezgodski said in a statement. “Decisions made within the next few years must be made correctly to ensure the growth and prosperity of the 6th District and the City of South Bend for generations to come.”
Niezgodski holds an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University South Bend. Her professional career includes management in the private sector and a stint in the military during Operation Desert Storm.
Niezgodski served in the US Army from 1988 to 1991.
“I believe I have the background and experience necessary to help transform South Bend into a World Class City and I look forward to working for the residents of the 6th District,” she says.
If you thought that her name sounded familiar, that’s because it is. Sheila Niezgodski is the wife of Indiana state representative David Niezgodski, a Democrat representing South Bend.
Niezgodski says that she will file the necessary paperwork to form a campaign committee later this month. Indiana’s primary day is May 5, 2015.
CORRECTION: The original version of our article erroneously said that Niezgodski was challenging Henry Davis Jr. She is challenging Oliver Davis. We deeply regret the error.
