Deadly South Bend Pedestrian Accident Still Under Investigation

Police tape crime scene

The St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office is investigating a pedestrian death that occurred on Saturday night in South Bend.

The prosecutor’s office said today that police responded just after 9 pm on Saturday night to an accident in the 600 block of East Ewing Street. Amy Mitchell, 33, reportedly dropped an item while walking across Ewing and attempted to retrieve it near the center of the road. This is when she was hit, later dying of her injuries at a local hospital.

Police officers report that John William Staton, 47, allegedly struck the victim with his vehicle. Staton remained on the scene after the accident. He was taken into custody at the St. Joseph County Jail on suspicion of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death. The prosecutor’s office said in a news release that they had not yet determined whether they will charge Staton with a crime.

Investigators are looking for a silver vehicle that was traveling in front of Staton’s vehicle shortly before the accident. Officers ask the driver or any passengers to speak with investigators. Witnesses should contact Lt. Corey Brothers at (574) 235-9611.
