December 2014 will go down as the least snowy December on record for South Bend.

The National Weather Service measured only 0.2 inches for the entire month. The city averages over 18 inches of snow in a typical December. The record was previously set in 1912 when 0.5 inches of snow was recorded throughout December.

Fort Wayne is also experiencing less snow than usual. Only 0.6 inches fell in Indiana’s second largest city in December. It is the 5th least snowy December on record for Fort Wayne, which is roughly 75 miles southeast of South Bend.

The reprieve comes just a month after South Bend experienced record snowfall in November.

Earlier this month, we reported that South Bend has the 12th most unpredictable weather in the country for cities with a population over 100,000. South Bend is typically accustomed to some of the most snow of any major city in the country.

The snow drought is not likely to last very long into January. The National Weather Service is predicting a messy weekend beginning on Saturday morning with a wintry mix possible throughout the day, changing completely over to snow early Sunday morning.
