‘Discover South Bend’ Series Looks at Libraries, Historical Preservation

The monthly “Discover South Bend” series continues this weekend with a look at local libraries. Three events are planned this Saturday at the Main Branch of the St. Joseph County Public Library in downtown South Bend.

The first event — titled “Preserving Photographic Memories” — will feature guest speaker Joan Hostetler of Heritage Photo and Research Services. Hostetler will discuss historic photographs and how to preserve them. The event takes place between 10:30 and 1:30 pm.

The second event — a “Historical Photo Scan-a-Thon” — will give participants the chance to scan historical photos. Participants are encouraged to bring their own photos from any time period in Indiana history. The scanned photos will become part of the “Indiana Album”, a bicentennial project that aims to catalogue historic photos from across the state.

Lastly, the library is hosting a scavenger hunt with a chance to win a SB 150 t-shirt or mug. Participants will need a participation form that contains ten different pictures taken at various St. Joseph County Public Library branches. The goal is to identify where the pictures were taken. You can download a participation form at http://www.libraryforlife.org/sites/default/files/SB150huntr.pdf.

The “Discover South Bend” series of events are held each month as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebration. The big celebration will happen during the weekend of May 22nd when the city formally celebrates its anniversary with ten separate entertainment zones downtown.
