The city of South Bend is opening three warming centers as brutal cold bears down on the region. Overnight temperatures are expected to plunge below zero with wind chills dropping as low as -20.
The O’Brien Recreation Center, located at 321 East Walter Street on the city’s south side, will be open overnight as a warming site.
The city says that they will not provide cots, blankets or food. Anyone using the O’Brien warming center can enter through the fitness center until 8:30 pm. Guests should go through the main doors after 8:30 pm.
The other two warming locations are Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 1522 Linden Ave, and the Charles Black Recreation Center, 3419 West Washington Street. Those locations are only open until 9 pm this evening.
