South Bend offers free Christmas tree removal through January 28

South Bend is offering free Christmas tree disposal for residents within city limits from Monday, January 4 to Thursday, January 28.

“Christmas tree collection will take place on the same day as trash pickup. Residents can schedule their pickup by submitting an online request at southbendin.gov/treepickup or by calling 311,” the city says in a news release.

The free tree pickup is limited to one tree per household. Any additional trees are billed at a rate of $10 per tree. Christmas tree pickups scheduled after January 28 will count as a resident’s free monthly yard waste pickup.

The city provided the following guidelines for residents to follow:

  • All trees must be placed at the curb before 6:00 AM on the day of pickup. Trees should not be placed in the street or alley. Cars should not be parked on top or in front of the tree.
  • All lights, ornaments, plastic coverings, and metals (i.e. nails or tree stands) must be removed from the tree prior to pick upItems left on trees can injure employees or seriously damage the tree shredding equipment, leaving it inoperable.
  • Artificial trees and trees containing any metal, glass, or wire will not be collected. Residents are responsible for the proper disposal of these items.
