South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has been home for a week from a seven month tour in Afghanistan. Dozens of people came out to welcome the mayor at South Bend International Airport.

The welcome party is not done yet. Today, the mayor will be honored in a celebration of his homecoming as part of downtown’s First Friday event — which has a theme of “Kid’s Night Out” this month.

Speakers will include former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan, Deputy Mayor Mark Neal, South Bend Cubs owner Andrew Berlin, and Mayor Buttigieg himself.

The gathering takes place at 5 pm in the foyer of the Century Center. The event is free and open to the public. It will conclude with a rendition of “Go Cubs Go”.

“I’m excited to return to my hometown and resume my duties as Mayor, the best job in the world,” Mayor Buttigieg says. “It was an honor to serve our country and I’m grateful for the warm welcome I have received since returning home. My experience has only deepened my gratitude for the men and women who have served our country, especially those who remain deployed in dangerous areas around the world.”

Buttigieg returns to office on Monday, October 6.
