Colfax Hill Development Bringing 16 More Apartment Units Near Downtown

Renters will soon have a new housing option near downtown South Bend. A four story mixed-use apartment complex is under construction at Hill Street and Colfax Avenue in a lot that is currently empty.

The $3 million project will bring 16 market-rate apartment units and street retail space to the burgeoning East Bank Village neighborhood once it is complete in summer 2015. The development will be only a block away from the new Purple Porch Co-op grocery store.

“East Bank projects have made a significant impact on downtown economic growth,” says Scott Ford, Executive Director of Community Investment. “We’re excited to see the momentum continue with more infill housing and retail development that will add to the vibrant atmosphere.”

“South Bend has a thriving downtown core that is only becoming more dynamic,” says Audra Sieradzki, a partner with Colfax Hill Partners, the company developing the complex. “We chose this location because of its proximity to all the great things the city has to offer.”

The development will include both two and three bedroom options.

The Colfax Hill project is the latest in a string of housing developments in and around downtown South Bend. Others include the six story multi-use apartment and retail complex across the street from the Emporium under construction from local developer David Matthews (read our full story here).

The former LaSalle Hotel is being converted into 59 apartment units and ground-level shopping as part of an $11 million project. And then there is the former Transpo site, which Century Builders plans to turn into 39 single-family homes, 22 town houses, and 26 other homes.
