South Bend Leaf Pickup Resumes After Snow Delay

Autumn Leaves

South Bend’s leaf pickup has resumed. Last week’s snowstorm put the effort on hold as city trucks abruptly were needed for snow removal.

The city says that leaf pickup will continue through the first week of December if the weather cooperates. The program was scheduled to end on November 20 but has been extended due to the unexpected inclement weather.

The leaf program picks up leaves that have been raked to the curb. The city says that leaves should be raked to the curb and not in the street since this can clog storm drains.

The city will not pick up piles that include debris such as sticks or trash. The city also advises that the burning of leaves is a violation of city ordinance.

If the city has already come by your house twice to collect curbside leaves, you will need to bag any remaining leaves in paper bags or reusable bins. The city will collect these as part of regular yard waste collection.

Residents can request an extra pickup for bagged yard waste during the first week of December. Call 311 for more information. Their office hours are Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
